As part of our mission, the Wyoming Health Council engages in work to promote knowledge about many serious health risks, such as heart disease, some cancers, diabetes, and high blood pressure, can be prevented by living a lifestyle that encompasses holistic wellness.
In the past, health was defined as the absence of illness. In 1948, the World Health Organization defined health positively, stating that “Health is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being – and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
(www.who.int/about/en/index.html). The National Wellness Association has expanded on this definition and defines the concept of wellness as “an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence.” (www.nationalwellness.org).
Holistic wellness includes not only physical health, but also balancing and maintaining emotional, spiritual, intellectual, occupational, and nutritional health and safety. The links at right provide helpful websites to assist you in your commitment to living a well-balanced and healthy lifestyle.
